Introduction

Casper recently introduced a new and improved mattress version of their popular boxed mattress for 2019. This new Casper mattress has kept its signature four layers of foam and added in a layer of springs to make a hybrid mattress that offers better support for more sleepers.

Our testing found that this mattress would be best suited to people of small to medium build thanks to the softness of the foam layers. Larger people may find they sink further than is optimal on this mattress, so may want to look for a firmer, more supportive base. Casper as a brand has a reputation for being the market leader when it comes to the mattresses in a box, and this new venture is no exception.

All the foam used in Casper mattresses is certified by the CertiPUR-US program. This means they are all made without ozone-depleting chemicals and are regulated in regards to indoor chemical emissions. So you can breathe easy knowing your mattress is made from quality materials.

In a nutshell

What you need to look out for

This mattress is ready to go right out of the box in a matter of minutes, so it’s great for those who don’t like to wait around to try out their new mattress. It’s also perfect for people who sleep hotter, as the coiled springs and breathable top layer help to encourage better airflow while you sleep.

The customer support is top-quality with Casper, they offer a 100-night sleep trial so you can be sure your new mattress is the perfect fit for you and your sleep style. Add on to this a 10-year warranty, as well as free delivery and removal, and it’s easy to see how this brand has become a fan favorite.

Value for money

In summary

The Casper Hybrid mattress scores fairly well across the board when it came to our in-house testing. It received top ratings for its customer service and guarantee, as well as its comfort level. Pain relief, value for money and durability all scored highly as well.Where this mattress didn’t score as well was when it came to edge support. It was by no means a bad rating but fell solidly in the middle. This is worth bearing in mind though if you’re an active sleeper who likes to change position a lot throughout the night.

What's it made from

Hybrid mattresses like this one combine layers of foam with supportive springs to offer a comfortable and adaptive place to rest your head.

Top Layer

Breathable comfort foam – 1.5” of breathable foam make up the top layer. The material has a feel similar to latex and allows for greater bounce and breathability.

2nd Layer

Pressure-relieving memory foam – The second layer is 1.5” of memory foam that is responsive and high-density, providing effective pressure relief and motion isolation. As this memory foam sits on the second layer, it helps to maintain a cooler temperature than mattresses that place it at the top.

3rd Layer

Zoned support firmer foam – This layer is made up of 2” of foam that works as a transition layer, offering firmer support in the middle where your hips will fall, and softer support around your shoulders and knees. This all helps to keep your spine in a neutral position, helping you sleep better.

4th Layer

Fabric wrapped springs – Instead of another layer of foam, the Casper Hybrid mattress has a layer of supportive coils that offer a cooler, more flexible experience.

Mattress Cover

The cover is a polyester blend and feels soft to the touch. It has a single white sheet on the top and darker fabric on the sides, making it stand out from the usual all-white cube we’re used to seeing. The cover is removable, but is not machine washable – bear this in mind, as machine washing it will void your warranty.

Comfort & firmness

Our testers generally found the firmness level of the Casper Hybrid mattress to be ideal for their sleep styles across the board. One tester even used the word “blissful” when sharing their feedback. Our testers felt pressure points around their backs, shoulders and hips when sleeping on their back or side were well supported. And, there was also good support across the legs when sleeping on their stomach.

Pain relief and support

Mattress-support

Our testers rated the Casper Hybrid mattress quite highly on pain relief thanks to its zoned support and ability to keep your body in alignment. Most sleep-related pain comes from sleeping on a mattress that isn’t matched to your sleep style. By using a hybrid mattress like this one, you’re able to support your body in various sleep styles, alleviating most back pains.

Thanks to its construction, the Casper Hybrid mattress is suitable for a range of different sleep styles. The zoned support layer offers firmer support in the hip area, and softer support for the shoulders and knees, to help make sure you’re comfortable throughout the night.

Sinkage and edge support

Casper-Sinkage-Edge-Support

Our testers voted the sinkage on the Casper Hybrid mattress to be just right for their sleeping preferences. All of our testers were over 5’ 10” and weighed an average of 196lbs. Because this is a hybrid mattress, you’re able to enjoy a good level of sinkage with the foam top layers, without feeling as though you’re enveloped by the mattress thanks to the coiled springs underneath.

Our testers had very mixed views on the effectiveness of the edge support though. The majority found it simply acceptable, but not the best. The foam layers help to reinforce the mattress, but indentations may still appear over time.

Heat retention

The coil layer and breathable foam on the top of the mattress help to regulate the temperature while sleeping. Unlike foam mattresses, the hybrid construction helps to keep you cooler for longer. This is due to the increased air flow through the open coil springs, stopping higher levels of heat retention. This makes it ideal for those of you who run hot while you sleep.

Unboxing

The Casper Hybrid mattress is delivered in a box, making delivery nice and easy., no matter which room of the house you want it to go in. There is some off-gassing when you first unpack the mattress though, which you should be aware of. This smell doesn’t last too long, but it is worth remembering when you plan your delivery time.

When you take the mattress out of the box, it fully expands and is ready to sleep on in just minutes, so there’s no need to wait around for hours before enjoying your new mattress.

Intimacy

Some couples may find that this mattress lacks the kind of bounciness and springiness that they are used to, this can be especially true thanks to the firmer support in the hip area of the mattress. There is not a lot of noise production though when moving on top of the mattress, so there will be minimal sounds that could detract from the experience.

Bed frame compatibility

Casper mattresses work on all standard bed frames including, adjustable bed frames, platform beds, and foundations. If you are using wooden slats, they should be 1.5 inches thick and spaced at a maximum of 4 inches apart. They do offer their own bases as well, which have been designed specifically with Casper mattresses in mind.

Is this mattress right for you?

If you are in a couple, then the zoned support in the Casper Hybrid mattress makes this ideal for having a good night’s sleep without disturbing each other. It’s also great for people who run hot while they sleep thanks to the temperature regulation through the breathable layers.

If you are a stomach sleeper or someone who prefers an especially firm or soft mattress, this may not be the one for you though. The medium firmness and zoned support make this better for those who sleep on their back or side.

In conclusion

In conclusion, the Casper Hybrid mattress is a high-quality, good value mattress that would suit a variety of sleepers. It regularly brings in four and five-star reviews from customers, and their 100-night sleep trial helps to ensure you’re fully satisfied with your new mattress.

A hybrid mattress like this one is perfect for those who enjoy the comfort and softness of a foam mattress but want the support and temperature control that comes from a spring mattress.
